Position Overview

TechEquity is seeking an experienced and strategic leader to join our team as the Chief Program Officer (CPO). This executive leadership role requires an individual with over 15 years of experience in program management, advocacy, research and/or organizing, including at least five years in senior leadership positions. Successful candidates will also have deep subject matter expertise  in labor, housing, and/or AI/tech policy issues.

The CPO will report to the Chief Executive Officer and work in partnership with the CEO, Chief Advocacy Officer and Chief Operating Officer to develop and lead strategy for the organization. They will oversee the Labor, AI and Data & Tech Programs and be responsible for shaping and overseeing the organization’s programmatic work, ensuring it aligns with the organization’s mission and goals. Additionally, the CPO will cultivate and manage relationships with organizational partners and share responsibility for representing the organization publicly in the media, through speaking engagements, and other thought leadership.

Specific areas of responsibility for this role include:

Vision and Strategy 

  • Contribute to and help shape the overall vision and strategy for TechEquity
  • Ensure that TechEquity’s programmatic work supports the organization’s mission, vision and theory of change, connecting research, data & tech strategy, advocacy, and implementation/enforcement to achieve our goals and desired outcomes
  • Maintain a deep understanding of the issue area including current events, policy discussions, research, community issues, and other areas that inform our current and future work
  • Identify opportunities for organizational growth and development of new program streams

Program Leadership 

  • Lead the strategy and work planning for our Programs team (AI, Data & Tech, Labor) including research, network building, development of tools and case studies, and collaborate on developing the org’s public policy agenda. 
  • Manage and grow high-performing Programs team, including coaching and managing direct reports, as well as cross-organizational team members and external contractors/vendors when needed 
  • Collaborate with the Advocacy team on integrating policy development and research into advocacy strategies
  • Work closely with the Communications, Outreach & Engagement team to develop communications and engagement strategies to support the goals laid out in the Programs team strategy
  • Work with Operations and Finance team to ensure adherence to operational security (OpSec), risk management, and compliance standards

External Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work with the CEO to identify and engage with funders who can support the Programs strategy, provide support in development of materials for funders (proposals, reporting, etc.), and cultivate relationships with potential and current funders, as appropriate 
  • Develop relationships with partners to align strategies and amplify collective power
  • Act as a thought leader for TechEquity, speaking in public across a variety of fora (events, media, etc) to promote the goals of our work

Evaluation of Impact

  • Collaborate with the COO to design and implement robust program evaluation strategies
  • Work with Operations & Finance team to develop, manage and oversee Programs budget
  • Help Programs team set meaningful, realistic, and measurable goals/KPIs for their programs and ensure accountability for achieving results 
  • Utilize data insights to refine programs and enhance their effectiveness in achieving strategic objectives
This exec-level role is ideal for someone with the following:
  • 15+ years of experience in nonprofit program management, philanthropy. public administration and/or research with a track record of leading successful, high-impact initiatives.
  • 5+ years of strategic leadership expertise in nonprofits, government, advocacy, social impact or other public service organizations.
  • Skilled communicator with strong writing and public speaking abilities.
  • Proven ability to build and manage coalitions, partnerships, and cross-sector relationships.
  • Experience managing and mentoring teams, with a commitment to equity-centered leadership practices.
  • Commitment to our organizational values and mission, with a demonstrated interest and experience in economic equity, labor or housing, tech, and/or civil rights issues.
  • Creative, opportunistic, and nimble—able to pivot in response to a shifting political landscape and identify emerging opportunities.

Position Details

This is a fully remote*, competitive salaried position with medical, dental, vision, and retirement benefits.

  • Location is remote with mandatory quarterly meetings held in Northern California. 
  • Due to the nature of the organization’s work and close integration of this role with our advocacy work in Sacramento, there is a strong preference for applicants located in California.
  • We anticipate this role will require occasional travel to attend conferences and TechEquity and/or partner events.

  • The salary range for this position is in line with our organizational pay scale: $180,000-190,000 which represents parity with the CPO peer roles. This represents the present low and high end of the organization’s pay range for this position. Actual pay will vary based on various factors, including but not limited to experience. 
  • Subsequent annual COLA adjustments will be made based on CPI in staffers’ MSA not to exceed 5%, and dependent on organizational financial conditions.

Our interview process includes:
  • An initial phone screen for 30 minutes (or less)
  • Typically, the second interview is a panel with members of the Programs team and lasts for 60 minutes
  • The final interview is with our Executive Leadership Team and lasts 45-60 minutes
  • A successful candidate going through all three rounds should plan to spend no more than 3 hours total in the interview process.
