People-First AI

Why People-First AI?

AI is poised to change the entire tech industry landscape—and with it, the global economy. Generative AI, automation, and algorithms are making their way into every facet of life, from housing and healthcare to elections and workplaces. Workers are worried about the security of their jobs. Renters are getting denied housing without knowing why.

We need to enact common-sense guardrails around these developing technologies both to protect people who are at risk from the greatest potential harms and to provide the trust and stability that will allow innovation and healthy markets in this promising space to grow.

We’re building a coalition of advocates, tech experts, advocates, and more across issue areas to coalesce around a common set of values and drive an alternative vision for AI policy that centers those who are most impacted by the technology. This vision includes clear guardrails, strong safety nets, and robust methods for the participation of impacted people in the design and deployment of technology. We believe that a collective approach centering people in each step of the AI system—paired with a series of thoughtful, intentional choices now—will not only prevent the potential harms these tools could inflict but also create the conditions under which this promising new technology can foster collective prosperity.

Our AI Policy Principles

We have developed a set of AI Policy Principles that serve as a north star in guiding policy development for Responsible AI:

  1. People who are impacted by AI must have agency to shape the technology that dictates their access to critical needs like employment, housing, and healthcare.
  2. The burden of proof must lie with developers, vendors, and deployers to demonstrate that their tools do not create harm—and regulators, as well as private citizens, should be empowered to hold them accountable.
  3. Concentrated power and information asymmetries must be addressed in order to effectively regulate the technology.

AI + Equity Education Series

We know that understanding tech can be daunting. That’s why we’ve created the AI + Equity Education Series. We bring together experts, advocates, and policymakers to better understand how AI will impact all aspects of daily life, including housing, hiring, voting, and more.
