To Colorado lawmakers: Strengthen Colorado’s AI leadership

Last year, Colorado made history by passing the U.S.’s first comprehensive regulation of AI: the Colorado Artificial Intelligence Act (CAIA). But we knew that a lot could happen between then and 2026 when the bill is due to be enforced.
Earlier this year, legislators introduced a bill to “soften” CAIA, SB 318. This included narrowing the definition of algorithmic discrimination, carving out exemptions, and easing requirements for companies using AI hiring tools. SB 318, though, failed to pass.
Now, as we near 2026, Colorado Governor Jared Polis is calling for a special legislative session for August 21 to potentially delay the implementation of CAIA to 2027, giving legislators additional time to “refine” the bill.
We’re urging legislators to approach the special session not as an opportunity to weaken Colorado’s AI Act, but rather to strengthen it, and cement the state’s role as a leader in responsible AI.
