Tech Worker Rights: Know Your Data Rights in California
Employers are notorious for collecting data about workers without much transparency about what is collected and how this information is used. Workers and researchers have highlighted examples of how data collected by employers could impact access to work; wages and benefits; health and safety; discipline and retaliation; and so much more. Do companies sell data to the highest bidder? Is collected data being used to train workplace algorithms, or something worse?
The introduction of the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2023 paved the way for everyday people to gain basic data rights and request collected information from companies – from employment to housing to the consumer market. So, what data rights do you have in California? Do you want to learn more about how you can find out what data companies collect about you?
