Who Shapes the AI Story? How Californians Feel About AI
Who shapes the story of the technology transforming our lives?
The public conversation about the future of AI has been dominated by two opposing views: those who believe AI will destroy humanity and those who believe it will usher in a new golden age of prosperity and human flourishing. The fervor of this debate—coupled with the unknowability of the technology’s development— makes it difficult for policymakers to know how to govern.
In the absence of certainty, and with tech CEOs clouding the picture with hype to profit from AI’s unfettered growth, doing nothing may seem the safest route.
However, this unwillingness to act is at odds with two current realities: that many of the impacts of AI are already well-documented, and that constituents strongly believe the government should be protecting them against these harms.
Many of us believe that swift government action is necessary for AI to work for us, not against us. But how do we navigate the challenges that this narrative environment creates? In what ways might we reshape the narrative to tell a different story: AI, if built carefully and used thoughtfully, can be developed and deployed in a way that promotes safety and fairness—as well as innovation..
Join us on Tuesday, August 19th, in San Francisco for a lively discussion about how we can tell that story and work towards a better future together. Communications expert Daniel Stone will share top findings from his AI sentiment polling research. We’ll then hear from Karen Hao, AI journalist and author of Empire of AI, and more in a group discussion. Additional panelists and exact location in San Francisco TBA.
Light snacks and drinks will be provided.
