Vice President of AI Policy

TechEquity is seeking an experienced and strategic leader to join our team as the Vice President of AI Policy. This senior leadership role requires an individual with 10-15 years of experience in technology policy, advocacy, or organizing. 

The Vice President will be responsible for strengthening and leading TechEquity’s campaign for people-first AI policy—providing input on policy models, developing narrative campaigns, providing subject matter expertise to the organization and external stakeholders, engaging with community partners, coordinating the organization’s engagement in rulemaking efforts, and engaging in efforts to enact people-first AI policy in targeted states with partners. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the intersection between technology, public policy, and economic justice, and will have experience in developing and advancing a strategic vision to achieve organizational goals.

About the role

Specific areas of responsibility for this role include:

  • Vision and Strategy: Develop a compelling vision and strategy for AI policy initiatives, aligning them with the overall mission and goals of the organization and existing work on housing and labor. Drive innovation and thought leadership in the areas of tech regulation, ethics, and equity.
  • Policy Leadership: Lead and oversee TechEquity’s AI policy program, supporting the organization’s engagement in state policy, narrative development, education with community and policymakers, and identifying and developing opportunities to advance public policy, enforcement, and implementation to meet the organization’s vision and mission.  Track all relevant policy models and developments and provide subject matter expertise and strategic direction to ensure the success of our AI policy campaign. 
  • Project Development and Management: Develop, manage, and implement policy projects throughout the entire lifecycle. Ensure timely completion of projects to enhance organizational impact and success.
  • Team Collaboration: Ability to effectively collaborate and partner with team members to advance a clear vision, campaign, and complete organization-wide projects related to AI policy. Partner with team members to analyze relevant policy models, track legislation, shape narrative campaign strategies, support and host coalition tables as needed, and strengthen our team’s awareness, input, and participation in the AI policy campaign. 
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Cultivate and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including community organizations, policymakers, researchers, and academics. Specifically supporting the development of civil rights partners engagement in AI policy in California and other states where appropriate. 
  • Committee Development: Build and support a committee of tech workers committed to advancing regulation and people-first tech policy, fostering engagement and leadership within the tech community.
  • Reporting and Evaluation: Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess the success and impact of our AI policy program. Regularly report progress to the senior leadership team.

This senior-level role is ideal for someone with the following:

  • 10-15 years of experience in technology policy, advocacy/campaigns, or strategic research.
  • Experience in planning and leading large campaigns or initiatives to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Strong writing and public speaking skills; able to present ideas in an organized and compelling manner.
  • Commitment to our organizational values and mission, with a demonstrated interest and experience in tech policy, economic justice, and/or civil rights issues. 
  • Strong networking skills and ability to engage a relevant community of aligned individuals and organizations on behalf of the organization.
  • Experience supervising a team and providing coaching and learning opportunities to staff; committed to building a transparent, safe, and inclusive organizational culture.

Position details:

This is a fully remote*, competitive salaried position with medical, dental, vision, and retirement benefits.

  • Location is remote with quarterly meetings in Northern California.
  • We value work/life balance and offer unlimited time off, flexible work hours, and a 4.5-day work week.
  • The salary range for this position is in line with our organizational pay scale: $128,987 to $145,810. This represents the present low and high end of the organization’s pay range for this position. Actual pay will vary based on various factors, including but not limited to experience. The salary range is set based on comparable salaries in our headquarters region in California. For employees outside of the state of California, the rate of reduction from the HQ band will be determined by the Regional Price parity for their home state (see Chart 1). Employees that live in a state that is equal to or greater than 100% of the US average will get 100% of the HQ salary bands. Employees that live in a state where cost of living is lower will get their salary discounted at the associated rate (not to exceed a discount of 10%). Subsequent annual COLA adjustments will be made based on CPI in staffers’ MSA not to exceed 5%.

Our interview process includes:

  • An initial phone screen for 30 minutes (or less)
  • Typically, the second interview is a panel with members of the team and lasts for 60-75 minutes
  • The final interview is with our Senior Leadership Team and lasts 45-60 minutes
  • A successful candidate going through all three rounds should plan to spend no more than 3 hours total in the interview process.
