Position Overview
TechEquity is seeking an experienced communicator to join our team in the newly created role of Vice President of Communications. Reporting to the COO, this senior leadership role requires an individual with 10-15 years of experience in communications, marketing, and/or public affairs.
The Vice President of Communications will be responsible for developing and executing comprehensive communications strategies to support engagement and outreach with our key audiences: funders, media, policy decision makers, and our community (partners, workers, and renters).
Overseeing our Sr. Manager of Social Media and Communications, this skilled communicator drives innovative engagement strategies via campaigns that amplify and effectively communicate the organization’s mission to various stakeholders. This should be achieved through a diverse mix of marketing, advertising, media, and strategic engagement campaigns using the full range of traditional and digital tools available. The Vice President will also collaborate closely with executive leadership, program leads, and cross-functional teams to achieve organizational goals.
The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the intersection between technology, public policy, and economic justice, and will have experience in developing and advancing a strategic vision to achieve organizational goals.
Specific areas of responsibility for this role include:
Vision & Strategy
- Develop and implement comprehensive engagement and communication strategies aligned with TechEquity’s goals
- Collaborate with the senior leadership team to amplify and support programmatic work
- Utilize data and analytics to inform decision-making and optimize strategies
- Prepare regular reports and presentations for executive leadership, SLT, and the board of directors
- Take on new projects and responsibilities as organizational strategies evolve
Communications Leadership & Execution
- Enhance and maintain the organization’s brand identity, ensuring consistency across all marketing and communication materials
- Oversee the Sr. Manager of Communications and support them in developing social media strategies to increase engagement and reach
- Lead the development of creative content, including graphics, videos, and written materials (reports, blogs, web content) that resonate with target audiences; oversee work assigned to freelancers and the Sr. Manager of Comms
- Plan, execute, and evaluate integrated marketing campaigns across multiple channels, including digital, social media, print, and events (in collaboration with the Sr. Manager of Comms)
- Lead the digital marketing strategy, including SEO, email, and web, and manage the organization’s website
Outreach & Engagement
- Develop and execute communication and public relations plans to effectively convey key messages to stakeholders, including funders, community, partners, and the media
- Write, edit, and design grant applications and reports, presentations, press releases, speeches, bylines, and other engagement materials
- Oversee the creation and distribution of community communications, including newsletters, event invitations, and updates on organizational activities
- Drive marketing plans for and support the execution of community or stakeholder events (attending in-person events to live-post and provide general support)
- Develop and nurture relationships with relevant media and influencers
This senior-level role is ideal for someone with the following:
- 10-15 years of experience in communications, marketing, and/or public relations/affairs in a non-profit or advocacy setting
- Experience in planning and leading large campaigns or initiatives to achieve goals and objectives
- Superior project management and time management skills
- Strong writing and public speaking skills; able to present ideas in an organized and compelling manner to internal and external audiences
- Self-motivated, decisive, and resourceful with the ability to flex with rapid change, anticipate, and act quickly on opportunities
- Commitment to our organizational values and mission, with a demonstrated interest and experience in tech policy, economic justice, and/or civil rights issues
- Experience supervising a team and providing coaching and learning opportunities to staff; committed to building a transparent, safe, and inclusive organizational culture
- Design skills are a plus
- Proficiency with WordPress, Salesforce, ClickUp, Canva, GA4, and Adobe Creative Suite
Position Details
This is a fully remote*, competitive salaried position with medical, dental, vision, and retirement benefits.
- Location is remote with quarterly meetings in Northern California.
- Due to the nature of the organization’s work and close integration of this role with our advocacy work and events in Sacramento and the Bay Area, there is a strong preference for applicants located in California.

- The salary range for this position is in line with our organizational pay scale: $130,664-$147,705. This represents the present low and high ends of the organization’s pay range for this position. Actual pay will vary based on various factors, including but not limited to experience. The salary range is set based on comparable salaries in our headquarters region in California. For employees outside of the state of California, the rate of reduction from the HQ band will be determined by the Regional Price parity for their home state (see Chart 1). Employees who live in a state that is equal to or greater than 100% of the US average will get 100% of the HQ salary bands. Employees who live in a state where cost of living is lower will get their salary discounted at the associated rate (not to exceed a discount of 10%). Subsequent annual COLA adjustments will be made based on CPI in staffers’ MSA, not to exceed 5%.

Our interview process includes:
- An initial phone screen for 30 minutes (or less)
- Typically, the second interview is a panel with members of the team and lasts for 60-75 minutes
- The final interview is with our Executive Leadership Team and lasts 45-60 minutes
- A successful candidate going through all three rounds should plan to spend no more than 3 hours total in the interview process.
