To Colorado Lawmakers: Strengthen the Colorado AI Act
Algorithms are increasingly determining things like where we live, how we work, and who gets arrested. These are highly consequential decisions that are being automated at a massive scale. But these algorithms have bias hard-coded into them—from the code itself to the data these algorithms are fed.
That’s why legislators in Colorado put together a first-in-the-nation law to try to curb AI-driven discrimination. As we know, though, any law is only as good as its implementation. In February, a task force is scheduled to issue lawmakers recommendations on implementing the Colorado AI Act. Legislators will also likely introduce additional legislation to modify that law and tackle other aspects of AI during Colorado’s next legislative session.
These are opportunities to strengthen key protections in this law before it’s implemented in 2026. We’ve joined other national and Colorado-based advocacy organizations in a letter outlining key provisions we want to see maintained in the Colorado AI Act and what we want to be strengthened and added.
